Planning Your Trip to the White Mountains

Before diving into the week’s itinerary, it’s important to prepare for your trip. The White Mountains cover a large area with diverse attractions, so having a plan helps you make the most of your time.

  • Best time to visit: This area is a four-season playground. The best time to visit depends much on what you want to do for outside adventure. Snow sports mandate a winter visit. Fall offers the best weather for hiking and biking. Fall foliage is spectacular from late September to mid-October. Summer is a great time for finding swimming holes and enjoying the many lakes in the area. Late March to mid-May is referred to as mud season. Many attractions close or have limited hours during this time. Perks of visiting during mud season include less crowds, a quieter atmosphere and, often, off-season pricing.

  • What to pack: New England weather is notoriously fickle. The varitiey and extremities of weather can quickly change in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Layers of clothing are essential to remaining comfortable, even during the summer. A windbreaker or light rain jacket are good options for late spring and summer. Fleece jackets and pullovers, wool sweaters and lightweight hats and gloves are recommended for early spring and fall. Heavy cold weather clothing and gear, including base layers, are a must for winter. Don’t forget to take care of your feet! Bring comfortable shoes, hiking boots for hitting the trails and Wellies if you plan to visit during mud season.

  • Getting Around: Renting a car is essential to explore the region fully. Roads are well-maintained, but some mountain routes can be narrow and winding.

Avalon Trail in winter offers a spectacular view in the White Mountains.
